Light Horse Logistics Hub – ALDI
Eastern Creek, NSW
Located at the Light Horse Interchange in Eastern Creek, Sydney, the ALDI facility at the Light Horse Logistics Hub has redefined the scale, design, and sustainability expectations for modern logistics centres. Owned by Charter Hall and designed by Nettleton Tribe Architects, the new facility balances industrial functionality with human-centric design, setting a new benchmark for distribution and administration facilities across Australia.
This project maintains the high levels of storage capacity and operational efficiency expected of a distribution facility, while also elevating the workplace experience through enhanced office design. The result is a 25,727sqm two-storey distribution and administration facility in Sydney’s western suburbs, purpose-designed to support ALDI’s long-term operational requirements while providing a high-quality environment for its workforce.
The pavilion-style office, with its timber and glass façade, contrasts sharply with the adjacent steel-clad warehouses. This design approach allows for natural light, strong street visibility, and improved wayfinding, making it vital in a precinct where heavy vehicle movements dominate. Landscaped courtyards, outdoor seating, and the butterfly roof frame create an environment that connects employees with nature while reducing reliance on artificial light and mechanical ventilation.
At the heart of the building’s performance is Viridian’s PerformaTech™ PH30 insulated glazed units, fabricated and installed by South West Aluminium. Specified for its advanced solar control, acoustic, and thermal properties, the glazing supports a comfortable environment for office staff while aligning with the stringent performance criteria targeted for a 6-Star Green Star Design and As-Built rating.
The selected glazing configuration of 6mm VFloat Grey, 12mm Argon and 6mm PerformaTech™ PH30 (#3) strikes the balance between daylight access and solar protection. In Sydney’s outer west, where conditions are hotter and drier than the inner city, this glazing minimises heat gain and glare without compromising views or natural light. Combined with operable louvres that capture prevailing breezes, the building is able to “breathe”, reducing operational carbon impacts and ensuring occupant comfort.
The success of Light Horse Logistics Hub was underpinned by strong collaboration between project partners. Charter Hall’s vision for a flexible and sustainable logistics precinct was brought to life by Nettleton Tribe’s architectural expertise, Richard Crookes Construction’s delivery capability, and South West Aluminium’s glazing craftsmanship.
For ALDI, the facility delivers a robust and efficient operation, integrating freezer and ambient storage with on-site office administration.
What distinguishes this project from other large-scale logistics developments is its considered integration of form, function, and sustainability. The pavilion-style office challenges conventional warehouse design, introducing generous natural light, improved energy efficiency, and a strong focus on employee wellbeing. Through the incorporation of Viridian’s PerformaTech™ PH30 insulated glazed units, the facility demonstrates how advanced glazing can enhance industrial architecture, reduce energy demand, and create a workplace environment comparable to inner-city office developments. The result is a future-ready logistics facility — sustainable, efficient, and people-focused — setting a new benchmark for industrial projects in Australia.
