The City of Melbourne unveiled a three-storey library and community hub at the heart of the Queen Victoria Market precinct on the Munro Site. This contemporary development provided a state-of-the-art library and a dedicated children’s section, while also celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the area. Through carefully curated artworks reflecting and honouring Indigenous culture, the library created a space that intertwined learning with cultural appreciation.
One of the highlights of the new library is the children’s section, a vibrant and inviting space designed to spark imagination and creativity. The passageway to the children’s library features artwork by First Nation artists inspired by Australia’s diverse fauna and flora. Viridian PixaGraphic™ was utilised to print the artwork onto mirrored glass panels, and installed along the passageway leading to this section, where the featured intricate designs turn the space into an immersive forest environment.
Viridian collaborated closely with Buildcorp Interiors and the commissioned artists from the conceptual phase through to completion. This partnership ensured that the artists’ visions were translated seamlessly into tangible, vibrant works of art. By utilising PixaGraphic™, Viridian transformed the intricate designs into a permanent feature of the library’s architecture.
PixaGraphic™ is a digitally printed, toughened safety glass that offers the ability to print images onto glass. The process involves using UV stable ceramic inks to fuse photorealistic images directly into the glass during manufacturing to preserve the colours and details of the images. For this project, Viridian’s Digital Projects Manager, engaged with an external company to apply a specialised mirror coating to the ceramic ink surface, to enhance the panels’ visual impact and result in a flawless finish.
The new Children’s Library at Munro Library is a shining example of how art, culture, and modern technology can come together to create spaces that inspire and connect. Viridian’s innovative PixaGraphic™ panels play a key role in this achievement, demonstrating how cutting-edge glass technology can transform artistic vision into immersive, enduring experiences.
