Redfern Terrace House
Redfern, NSW
In the heart of Sydney's Redfern, a remarkable transformation has breathed new life into a heritage terrace house, turning a once dark and confined space into a light-filled modern sanctuary. The collaboration between Thodey Design and Kate Lawrence Interiors has created a stunning example of how thoughtful design and advanced glazing solutions can revolutionise a traditional home.
The original heritage house presented typical challenges of its era which included closed-off rooms and a long windowless corridor that didn’t serve the needs of modern family open plan living. The design team faced the complex task of preserving the building’s historic character while creating bright, open spaces that would connect seamlessly with the outdoors.
To achieve the perfect balance between light, comfort, and energy efficiency, the project utilised Viridian’s LightBridge next™ double glazing. This advanced glazing solution was implemented throughout the home, particularly in the new Aneeta windows and large sliding doors that now punctuate the space.
LightBridge next™ was chosen for its superior performance characteristics. It offers enhanced acoustic properties that reduce outside noise by 29% compared to standard glazing, making it a crucial feature for this inner-city home. LightBridge next™ double glazing also provide the ability to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round allowing for seamless natural light to fill the room without compromising on comfort.
The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. The once-dark corridor has given way to a light-filled thoroughfare, with strategically placed high windows offering views of neighbouring treetops while maintaining privacy in this inner-city home. A floating staircase, bathed in natural light from above, creates a striking architectural feature that connects the home’s levels.
The clever placement of windows and sliding doors has created a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for family gatherings and entertaining. LightBridge next™ plays a crucial role in this success, allowing for larger spans of glass that maximise natural light without compromising on thermal comfort or energy efficiency.
This project stands as a testament to how modern glazing technology can transform heritage homes for contemporary living. Through the combination of thoughtful design and Viridian’s advanced double glazed solutions, this Redfern residence now offers the perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort, proving that heritage homes can be reimagined for the future without losing their character.
