A Vehicle for Light and Colour

RACT (Royal Automobile Club Tasmania) recently completed an extensive redevelopment of its Hobart headquarters. Gone is the outdated 40 year old building that previously sat on the corner of Murray and Patrick Streets; in its place sits a modern four storey structure designed by HBV Architects. The new building provides staff with a contemporary workplace filled with natural light, while customers can enjoy a colourful, lively service environment..

Wonder Wall

Glass provides the dramatic canvas for this remodelled 1920s bungalow in bayside Melbourne. The effect of bordering lush grasslands isn’t an attempt to create the grand 3D illusion, so much as reinforce a sense of tranquil suburban oasis. The entire glazed feature stretches an uninterrupted fifteen metres and stands just over three metres high.  Viridian and DigiGlass combined to provide the glazing technology necessary to allow the architect and client’s remarkable vision.

Good Things Come In Glass

The technology park warehouse type is frequently bottom-drawer variety. Every so often this featureless anonymity is broken. RWG’s Port Melbourne headquarters responds to its waterfront setting with a suitably extroverted turn of form. Its response to place is highly appropriate.  Architect Robert Conti’s quest for high visual permeability achieves light flow, high visibility and sharp energy management. It was a potentially fraught strategy for an operation that requires such stable internal temperatures while avoiding the appearance of an oversized cool-room.

Fluid Expression

A sense of fluidity and a series of flexible living spaces, created largely through an abundance of curves and innovative use of glass, are prevalent in this home located in the inner Melbourne suburb of South Yarra.

Raise Your Glasses

Established in 1862, the General Havelock Hotel has undergone a few facelifts during its lifetime. In the 1930s, like many establishments of its era, the bluestone Victorian hotel was made over with an Art Deco theme.  Some 80 years later, it was the discovery of several of these long forgotten Art Deco jewels that inspired the direction of the hotel’s latest refurbishment.

Light Box

Sam Crawford is winner of Viridian’s 2010 Vision Award for Best Residential Interiors use of glass. Sam’s refurbishment of a Newtown terrace in inner Sydney may appear mild at first glance, but is wild at heart in the way it invents light and space throughout the body of the structure.

Classy Glass

High visibility goes a long way towards claiming top perch and BMW Adelaide’s busy West Terrace showroom is a high profile example of just how a prestige vehicle dealership recognises the role design plays in product appeal. A dynamic glass façade cleverly brings out the best in the vehicles on display. Aurecon’s lead designer and engineer Niko Tsoukalas has created a suitably innovative engineering solution for the German marque.
